Smart Ports

Port of Tyne Leads the Way in Smart Port Innovation

The Port of Tyne, located in the North East of England, handles up to 100,000 TEU annually. With a current throughput of 66,000 TEU, the port processes around 275 containers daily. To modernize operations and improve safety, the port partnered with British Telecom (BT) and Gorilla Technology to implement intelligent automation.

BT, supported by Ericsson, deployed a private 4G and 5G network across the port. Gorilla Technology contributed advanced video analytics to automate container inspections, enhance safety compliance, and streamline operations. This collaboration positions the Port of Tyne as a leader in smart port transformation.

Case Studies

The Challenge

01

Manual Inspections Slowed Operations and Increased Risk

Container inspections were previously conducted manually. This exposed workers to safety hazards near heavy containers and fast-moving cranes. Human error and inconsistent documentation were also concerns.

02

Labor-Intensive Lock and Seal Checks

Inspecting container locks and seals required significant manpower across multiple shifts. The process was time-consuming and difficult to scale. There was a clear need for automation that could link inspection data to container IDs and specific zones.

03

Ensuring PPE Compliance

To protect workers, the port needed a system that could monitor personal protective equipment (PPE) usage. Any non-compliance had to be detected and addressed immediately to maintain safety standards.
